vendredi, le 16 janvier

well, the last couple days have been pretty fun. notably, for a couple of new friends i've made. one is Katie Rowbottom, the girl who lived here with the Bassouls all of last school year. i didn't hang out with her very much at all until wednesday, when she took me to dinner with some american, english, and french friends. we went to this great fondue restaurant that served spectacular food and, as it turns out, wine in baby bottles. everybody was great, and of course sharing american culture-isms (like "that's what she said") with the british guys and just listening to them talk in general was hilarious.

on the long trip home, i had some real great conversation with Katie. as she's been through so much of what i'm experiencing now, we had a lot to talk about. in general, we've gotten along spectacularly. she had a lot of good advice for me, especially about the best places to travel. unfortunately, she just left town this morning. but i think i'll stay in touch with her for a long time.

the other chum i met is a guy named Bruno in my ultimate frisbee class. we had some nice chat before and after class. he spent a year in minnesota, so he spoke some english and could fill in the gaps in our conversation. it also turns out he plays hockey here, and told me about a weekly pickup ice hockey game i can play in - he says i can borrow gear and everything!

in addition to that, i am doing my best to get involved in the ultimate frisbee scene here in town, whatever it may be.

thank you for the birthday packages i've received already. nick, i'll assume you're responsible for the frisbee, because i don't know a "Chris Whirrett" (the name on the return label)... thank you so much. i'll open the rest on my birthday.

besides that, all is well with school and home life. the food, as always, has been plentiful and delicious. i am a bit sick right now, but i am taking it easy until i am well. much love to all of you.
